to Catch Blues and Beer on the Gulf Coast Route?

Hey there. We are leaving FL and gradually working our way toward Austin in a couple of weeks, following the Gulf Coast toward NOLA. We'll take some interstates, and some backgroads to get there. Does anyone have any ideas about where to catch some great live blues, and partake of some true cajun/creole food on our way over there? Any ideas greatly appreciated.

I would like to suggest missing I-75 on your northern exit out of Florida and take Hiway 19 along the coast. It is a cool old highway (in real good shape), and you will go through little towns and beautiful country views.

About mid-way up is a great little park called Nature's Coast RV Resort - http://www.naturescoastrvresort.com/  It has 15 spaces, and the owners are Nu! Young couple that escaped the Sillycone Valley. When there, go into town and have seafood right off the boats. Very worthwhile stop.

If I can think of any good stops between there and Texas, I will post them up. We are usually busting balls across there, because either a) we want to get to Florida, or b) because we stayed in Florida too long!!

What's your favorite way to get to TX?

Ferry from Tampa to Corpus Cristi

But, since that hasn't really panned out yet, we like going up  19 to Tallahassee, then west on 10. If you have the time, catch Hiway 98 in Perry and take that out to Pensacola. We have driven some of that, and it is a great drive. It is a bit slower because you are going through small towns, but it is worth it.

I recommend taking the 12 bypass around New Orleans unless you want to stay in that area. Last year, I-10 was pretty rough on that loop to New Orleans, so I would avoid that.

Once you get into Texas, do not hesitate to take the "yellow" roads. The little Texas highways are some of the best I have been on. Even the two lane highways are very wide, and have been in very good shape.

I like trying to hit the bigger towns on the interstate at night. We hit rush hour in Port Charles last year when caravanning with M&D and I hated it. Usually, if I am interstate driving, I do the bulk of it at night. When driving highways, I take them during the day. We have seen the most amazing countryside while on the highways.

Oooh, thank you. I've got the route mapped out. Didn't know about those yellow roads, but I tell ya, I'm sure looking forward to getting out on the big wide roads of the west again. Thanks!

When are you guys heading west? Ang and I are departing tomorrow, quick stop at Nature's Coast RV, then out to Texas. Any chance of meeting up someday soon?

Hey that's a definite possibility! We have to go to Bradenton on Monday to have our oven fixed. Staying at Manatee SP. Hopefully we'lll be out of there by Tuesday. After that we're beating a path out of here and heading West.

Probably in NOLA by the 8th, then in Austin by the 14th through whenever. Staying at Pecan Grove till the 18th then not sure after that.

Where are you staying? Any recommendations after Austin? We think we want to check out Fredericksburg, I think. Someone told us it's nice.

We are at Nature's Coast RV in Steinhatchee right now. It is just off of 19. Great drive and a cool little park. We should be rolling out of here in the morning. I have some work to catch up on, so hopefully I can get that done tonight and we will be heading east in the morning. We will be looking for Damien and Michelle in Texas - not sure yet.  Hoping it will be along the Gulf coast - south Texas. Still too cold in the upper part :)

Keep in touch - we will run into each other.
