RVing in Mexico: Any Suggestions?

Hey all, long time no write. Hope summer's been treating y'all well. We've been hanging with the Texans here in Lake City CO all season. The drawl is catchy.

Anyhow, we're starting to seriously considering hanging out in Mexico this winter, but aren't sure if it's a smart thing to do or not. Both of us know minimal Spanish, and we've never driven into Mexico before, especially with a 5th wheel. I've got some distant cousins outside of Mexico City I'd love to see, but I'm a little nervous about the prospect of getting there.

What do you guys think? Any of you been down there recently? Are we nuts? Any advice or tips greatly appreciated.

-Rene & Jim

Wow - that sounds awesome! I am sure if I could get my Verizon card to work down there, and then convince my RV finance company to look the other way for a while, I would be making plans for a south border crossing!

I have nothing to contribute to your plans, other than we are heading to Cozumel in December for some diving and sunshine and cold beer. I am sure there will be a full report upon our return :)

Ok Kev, here's the plan....you come along with us, and we'll share the broadband with you guys!

I'm working on researching the insurance thing, will let you know how you can swing it with your finance people.

Cozumel.....we went there on our honeymoon. It's been too long. I'm jealous!

Sweet! Count us in! A bit of a warning tho: I am bandwidth-needy. I make up for it in my BBQ and Marg-Mixing skills :)

How long are you all in Colorado? Ang and I are headed to Moab this weekend, then heading over to Denver. We haven't decided on a path to Denver yet, but I see you may be along the way - if we are creative. I know we have threatened to stop in before....

Mmmmmargaritas and BBQ...sounds more than fair!

We'll be here till 9/10-ish. After that we're heading to Boulder for a while, then north to MT. What's your final destination?

Final destination? I choose cremation :D

From Moab we will go to Denver and stay until after the first of October. Then we will head east and south. We are considering a rally in Oklahoma in Oct, thinking about heading straight east to the Atlantic coast, then south to Florida. We will hang there a couple of months, then off to Texas and other less crowded and less expensive locations!

If we don't catch you on the way to Denver, maybe we can meet up in Boulder. We will be staying two weeks at Cherry Creek State Park in Denver from 9/13.

Cherry Creek it is! I was just going to start researching places to stay. Ya think we need reservations?

Our dog, Jerry, has to see his vet is in Denver around that time, and there's a three legged dog in Boulder we are looking forward to meeting. We plan on being in the area around the same time, and so are our friends Matt and Sara. Sounds like this could be fun!

Uh oh - sounds like good times! I would suggest reservations, as you can only do nightly at the state park without reservations. Go to ReserveAmerica.com and hook it up. We are in the "Buffalo" loop. Our check in date is Sept 13.

Looking forward to it!

First, let me say, I am sorry we missed meeting some of you last week.

However, in response to the original question. We went down to Monterrey, Mexico from Laredo, TX last Feb for some medical stuff. Way cheaper and great quality of care compared to US.

We didn't take the truck and trailer, actually took a bus so we could scope it out for future trailer travel. The toll road was in excellent condition, we wouldn't hestitate to take the trailer next time. We felt very safe the entire time, spent about a week and relied on our small amount of Spanish, a dictionary and public transit/taxi. No major problems.

That being said, we have talked to a lot of people that suggested always travelling in a group, so that someone can stay with the rigs at all times. I suspect it is no different than US, some places safe, some not.

We have seriously considered spending a winter down there too.  Would love to do some more diving. Maybe there could be a NuRvers caravan sometime in the future?
