Where to Stay in the Big Bend of West Texas

Can't believe we've been in West Texas for an entire month. Got here in February for the Cowboy Poetry Gathering and whammo...it's almost April!

In our search for offbeat, cheap fun and funky places to stay, we found two of the best RV parks we've ever been to. But keep in mind, if you're  lookig for five-star amenities and a swimming pool with Poolie the Pool Bo, fuhgettabout it.

However, if you're looking for REAL character, lots of local flavor and some inspiring conversations with folk from all over the world, do visit:

Marathon Motel RV Park

and

 Stillwell Ranch RV Park

Marathon Motel is a funky 1940's era establishment that now has full hookups for RVs. It's within stumbling distance of the historic Gage Hotel, a watering hole with some of the best food in Texas and a bar with overpriced but tasty drinks. There's another bar next door that we didn't try but it appears to be more locals-oriented with reasonably priced booze.

Stillwell Ranch is one of the oldest homesteads in West Texas.Grab a cold one in the Stillwell Store, pull up a chair on the porch and listen to the fascinating stories from old timey rustlers, cowboys and ranchers. At night, you'll hear live country acousic music played by Eldon and Ann. Many Stillwell customers have returned for decades, it's THAT special. We plan on joining that club next winter!

Just one recommendation: STOCK UP on provisions. There is only one grocery store that sells a limited selection of foods and the liquor store has cornered the market with way overpriced booze.

Hope to see you there.
