What kind of toilet paper do you use in your RV? I know there's made for RV TP, but have read and was told that you could get away with using any single ply. Is this true?

It's so funny how once you become an RVer topics about poo and blackwater tend to pique your interest! ;)

Scott single ply, always. Never had a problem with it.

Don't buy the Rv TP, it's a total sham.

Thanks ... and it is part of the circle of life.

Are those those tank digesters worth it, or also a sham?

We use "Septic Safe" 2-ply, and no chemicals in the tank. We are typically connected so I dump the black once or twice a week. No problems so far, I stink think.

Kev, I'm always amazed that you don't use chemicals. But I think perhaps the size of your rig has a lot to do with it too. More space for any stink to dissipate, you know what I mean?

We use TST chemicals. We boondock the majority of the time and tend to go at least a week without dumping. In our 24' rig, there's not much space for stink to go, other than our living quarters, which is why we use them.

Also found that the tank vent gadget thingy (oh what is that called?) that looks like a shark fin and goes on your roof, made a HUGE difference in getting rid of odors.

Be aware that none of the tank chems are "digesters" as your familiar with. Nothing digests in an RV black tank as it does in a septic system; that's why they're called "holding" tanks. The chemicals just mask stink.

What are shams are the cleaners that supposedly clean muck off the sides so your tank indicators work. These "cleaners" never, ever work.

Some people swear by the Geo Method (google it). It's a homemade combo of water tank softener and laundry detergent. I haven't been brave enough to try it. One of these days.

All good points from LWD. My only addition is to please don't use any additives that are formaldehyde based. I was excited to read that California banned the use of those additives! (I rarely like when the government tells us what to do - this was a good thing)  There are plenty of options without going with the ugly stuff.

Oh, and Rene - you KNOW I think my shit don't stink :P

Thanks guys.

And now for the real critical question ... the toilet paper .. roll it from above or below?

Silly question. Everyone knows that if you use the last bit of paper, you just leave and the next time you come back, there is magically more paper there! I think it is the TP Fairy that comes in and does that, and the TP Fairy always rolls it from above.

Angle Soft is cheap and available everywhere.  Single or double rolls work as advertised against the evil Klingons.  Charmin has been known to plug up the pipe leading to the holding tank necessitating finding a cut branch or two to cure.

We found a product in Quartzsite that works great at keeping down the odor.  Pure Power, about $25 per half gallon, use only 2 ounces per tank.

From the top of course.....
