Dog friendly?

I was reading the camp that Technomadia is setting up for Burning Man and was thinking of going. When I read up further on it I found the "no dogs" bit and am wondering what other places be it events, campgrounds, or whatever is on the road that do not allow dogs. I mean don't allow them at all.

Few places have all out bans, but there are lots of places that make it hard for our canine friends to have fun. Here's my partial list...

  • Upscale RV parks with crotchety old people tend not to allow dogs, or at least dogs over 20 pounds. Many of the parks in states with high concentrations of snowbirds tend to prohibit or severely restrict them.
  • National parks. They just suck when it comes to where dogs can go. The parking lots are about it.
  • Parks in tourist-oriented places. For example, the park where the first NuRVers rally was held only permitted dogs during winter. Dogs were prohibited during summer.
  • Florida beaches. The most un-dog friendly place we've ever been to.
We stick to national forest, BLM land and low-key parks without a lot of restrictions. Because we've always had a big Shepherd dog in the family, we are really careful about where we'll go with him, because we just don't want to put up with the anti-dog vibe.

By the way, Escapees parks are really, really cool when it comes to dogs of all sizes and breeds. We found that to be a pleasant surprise.

We have also found that most events that are not specifically for full time RVers prohibit pets in general.   There are a lot of events that allow RVs (like music festivals, regional burns, Burning Man, etc.) that have a 'leave the pets at home' policy.   Not many of them are too happy when we point out that bringing our cat IS leaving her at home.

I can understand the reasoning - bringing a regular household pet to an event can be traumatic for it and the event.  But nomadic pets tend to be much more adaptable.

And in the case of Burning Man.. there is no way I would *want* to bring my pet anyway. It's a harsh harsh harsh environment with lots of loud scary sounds that is stupid enough for us humans to go to.. let alone subjecting an unconsenting animal to.

Gateway Burn (a regional St. Louis area burn) this year allowed pets that were 'at home' at the event.  They rock.   But they are definitely an exception.

So if you intend to travel with your pets and attend events.. be prepared to board or get pet sitters.

Totally agree Cherie, I would never in a million years take my dog to BM. And yeah, that's true, in our 3 years on the road we've found very few events that allow pets.

I guess I don't attend many events then. I was about to say the last event I attended with my German Shepherd in tow was the US Festival. That was 1983. Yeah, I just kind of realized that I've avoided large crowds like that since then.

National Parks are the biggest offenders we've been up against. So, we do like LiveWorkDream and stay mostly in National Forest and State Parks.

But if you ever want to see the dog-friendliest town, ever, go to Austin! That place LOVES their dogs! Almost any restaurant you go to with outside seating will allow dogs. They will bring bowls of water for the pooches. I couldn't believe how friendly Austin was to the pooches.

If ours wasn't such a spaz. Would have nice to take him out with us!

I have washboard abs. They are just hidden under 50#s of laundry.

Oh yes, so very true! When I first landed in Texas I lived in Austin at a friend's place for a couple of months. Somehow I landed my current contract (tech job) in San Antonio. Go figure.

Colorado forests are also great dog-friendly places. Alot of the forest areas allow off-leash walking ("voice" control). In Nederlands, CO there were dogs everywhere.

I found this online...looks helpful

 http://dogfriendlycom-store.stores.yahoo.net/

I downloaded a free sample page (alabama, oh well) and it seemed to have a lot of info about paces allowing dogs, where they are allowed to walk, and if there are nearby trails that allow them.

Hope this helps
Robin
