How are you making ends meet on the road?

I currently work in IT, namely server support. Or in other words I'm the computer guy you never see who magically fixes the servers. I love what I do, but know this career doesn't fit the lifestyle. Tbh after 15+ years of working in IT I'm ready to try new things.

I'm fishing for any ideas and suggestions those of you out there have.

Thanks
Steve

There are lots of mobile friendly careers.. and IT is generally one of them (anything you can do remotely, or even finding traveling service/training jobs).

Personally, I continue to run the same software development biz I ran when I was more stationary.  Plus Chris and I take on cool tech consulting gigs from time to time, and have even tried workamping packing boxes at Amazon.com during peak season (well, we did that more for the fun of it, the $$ was a nice bonus that funded a few months of travel).   We've also gotten into developing iPhone apps that create some nice residual income.

Other mobile careers that we've encountered include various medical professionals, photography, writing, graphic design, balloon animal twisting, tattoo artist, accounting, performance art (music, dancing, hooping, story telling, etc), dance instructor, personal/business coaching, jewelry making, sales, and so many more.

NuNomad recently made a great posting showing 25 mobile careers with examples of people doing them:

Basically.. if you have skills and confidence you can get work when you need it, you'll do fine. Embrace agility, design your life to be the least dependent on cash as possible - and you'll thrive.

I also need to get back into the swing of things and get down to editing the footage I took at the recent gathering that profiles many of the NuRVers households that answer these sorts of questions.

I'm not on the road yet, but as a writer/editor, I plan to take on freelance jobs, which can be found at plenty of job boards on the web. I also have a web page that's like a portfolio of sorts.

I think that anyone with a good grasp of grammar and writing can make money like this.

My husband will be a travel radiologic technician. He'll only take jobs when we need the money and after the job is over, we'll travel as much as we want until we feel the need to inject more funds into our savings once again. The medical field is great for providing a way to travel while still making money.

I envy you Cherie and Monica! You both have talents that transform really well to this lifestyle. I currently do merchandising and mystery shopping wherever Bill's job takes us but with my fibromyagia I wish I had something that I could stay at home and do at 2am if I so desire. I am trying to start a blog on fulltiming with a chronic illness but I haven't gotten it off the ground much...
