As many of you know, we're regulars at Burning Man - the big festival in the middle of the desert of Nevada. This year's Burning Man event will be Aug 30 - Sept 6.

For the past two years, we've organized a camp specifically for full time travelers like many of us here at NuRVers are. And more specifically, it's geared towards those of us who travel with our homes. Last year, we had 70 like minds camped with us - it was *incredible*.

We've just started organizing efforts to put the camp together for 2010 again - and would like to extend special invitation to our fellow NuRVers to join us. The below graphic will take you to our information page on the camp where you can find out more.

Burning Man itself may seem unreachable for some - either in the time commitment, cost, size or the extreme environment. For those who would like to get a taste of burner culture, we'd like to additionally extend an invitation to join us at some of the regional Burning Man events that we're lining up to attend.

These events tend to 3-4 nights and have only a few hundred folks at them - not nearly as overwhelming.

The events we're aiming to hit this year are:

  • Interfuse - Kansas City area - April 29 - May 2
  • Flipside - Austin, TX - May 27 - 31
  • Gateway Burn - St. Louis, Mo - June 10 - 13
  • Lakes of Fire - Lacota, MI - June 24 - 27

The only one we're firm on attending at this point is Gateway Burn - as we just recently joined the planning staff of this event. The event last year meant that much to us. It's a smaller regional burn of some really fabulous people - who LOVE us nomads. I

n fact, they loved us so much - that they're specifically aiming to be the first ' Nomad Certified Regional Event'. What does that mean? Well - they're exempting us full time RVers from their no pets rule- and allowing us to bring our animals so we don't have to worry about finding sitters. And, they have an easy electronic ticket system that doesn't require much more than a week prior to commit to attending. We have their ear, and they're excited to be a host of a nomadic convergence.

We feel that Gateway Burn - with it's central US location, being hosted on RV friendly grounds and an awesome community makes it ideal as a 'Burning Man Lite' experience.

Perfect for folks not up for the full Nevada experience, or who can't make it otherwise. And ticket prices are expected to be just $30 for the event.

So, we're leading a charge to make Gateway Burn a possible nomadic destination this summer - and would urge you all to consider routing that way with us.

We're always available to answer any questions you might have about Burning Man or the regionals.

All our best, - Cherie n Chris

We hope to meet you at Burning Man 2010.  I believe we will be with the Earth Guardians there.  If for some reason, we won't be with the Guardians, we will definitely look you up and stop by to say hello.

As for regional events, we are hoping to attend Playa del Fuego (PDF) in Delaware for Memorial Weekend!  Unfortunately, it's the same time as Flipside in Texas.  PDF isn't expensive, but they do have a no dogs rule, that is always up for review, due to misbehaved dogs in previous events.  We have always brought our parrot there, and he loves it!  This event sells out in minutes, and it's usually a blast.  RVs are usually welcome unless it's been raining heavily, then you get stuck in the parking lot.

We'd love to hit one of those, but we just haven't planned any of our dates that far out yet.  Our "future track" is just starting to come together now.  We'll see you at one if we can arrange it.

'01 Newmar Dutch Star - No name yet, but my wife calls it the Death Star. :S
'06 Jeep Unlimited Rubicon - "Teflon" - has to go away soon. :(

'09 Jeep Unlimited Rubicon - I call it "Little Tiny Baby Jeep That Needs To Grow Up By About Four Inches", but Dasy isn't really happy about that.

'03 Yamaha TW-200 - "Little Tractor"

Well.. all the regionals have come and gone (and we had a blast at Gateway Burn with some NuRV folks).   Now we look forward to the big event at the end of August.

A few NuRVers are aiming to join us at Camp Nomadia, as well as several nomads from across the globe.  It's looking to be an epic time!

We've decided to be a non-placed camp - which means we'll seek out a spot once we're onsite. This gives us the benefit of being able to accommodate last minute additions to the camp.

Interested in joining us?   Here's a recent post we made about it:

See you on the playa!

Interested? You betcha.
I've been kicking the idea around for a while.

My largest reservation is wanting to remain at higher latitudes (and altitude) as long as possible before heading that far south (and hot!). But none of my other plans or intentions for this year have come about either, so you never really know.

Anyway...your page says: This means each nomad is responsible for all his own needs – food, water, cooking, clean-up, shelter, shower, power, gray-water handling, etc. But unlike many other more infrastructure-heavy camps, we also have no camp fees.

Q: what are or will be the resources there for dumping and water refills?

Thanks,

Bryan

A PS Note:
One of the kitchen people is still looking for someone to haul his load of crap down there but offers shade space and more once that is done ( take a look at his ad http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/rid/1845586150.html ) I considered doing it but I wouldn't be heading back to Portland afterward.

It is best to plan on no resources being available. In years past, they have had a "honey wagon" that will go around and suck out your tanks. One of the few "vending" things they allow out there. But bring a pile of $$ - it is not cheap. Also, it is not the easiest thing to do to track them down.

As for water, I understand this year they will have water supplies available in the small town just outside of the event. This means you would have to leave, drive into town, buy the water, then return. IMO, major bummer. Once you are inside, the last thing anyone wants to do is go outside the awsomeness of The City.

My advice: plan on bringing everything you need, and to stretch your tanks as far as possible. You will find that outdoor showers with a solar shower is awesome, and 5 gallons on water in the solar shower is good for two times. Use the porta potties when you can. They aren't so bad in the morning :) Fill your fresh tank, empty your waste tanks before you enter the City. Get jugs of water - I like the 5 gallon collapsible/reusable containers. Use the jug water for outdoor showers, drinking, etc. Use your fresh tank for flushing, indoor showers, etc.

It is not that tough to stretch your tanks. Most you will probably be there is a week, so make that your boondocking goal!

With a little conservation and planning, it is not difficult. Remember that YOU are making the event possible by being totally self sufficient!

I have washboard abs. They are just hidden under 50#s of laundry.

Gotcha.
and reiterating my basic point  ;)

On showers...
The best piece of (car) camping gear I have ever bought is a simple pump up garden sprayer. One or two gallon plastic or metal canister ($10-40)...

Set it out in the sun for a few hours and (even the one gallon) is enough water for two (short haired) people to shower with.

The older ones with a brass wand are better but either way just trim the wand tubing back some and you are set to go.

Set the metal ones near the fire and you have hot water all night; great for washing up dishes or rinsing off at the beach too
It's a GoodThing.

The biggest advantage of them (vs traditional camp showers) are:
1) no need to rig up a support and then lift 5 or more gallons of water
2) take your warm water wherever you may like to do your showering

Yup.. as Kev said, don't plan on refills/dumping onsite.  There are porta-potties provided which can help you not depend on your own black tanks entirely.

For grey water, we evaporate our dish water to help save on that tank space.  If you shower outside, you will need to make sure no grey water ever hits the ground and plan to bring an outdoor catchment and evaporative pond.

Quite honestly, for the past 3 years..  Chris and I both have been able to make about 45 gallons of fresh water (filling our fresh tanks - 38g, plus a couple 2.5g bottles) for 11-12 days on the playa without problem at all.   (We tend to go in early and stay late).

We're so used to boondocking and conserving water and power, that being out there there really is no extra thought for us.
