Anyone Going to Quartzsite?

Wondering if anyone is going to be headed to Quartzsite in January. We will be there for most of the month. We have been in the area before, but stayed in campgrounds. We will be out on the BLM this time, and have only done limited boondocking (under a week at a time), so looking forward to a new challenge.

We may start at Dome Rock, then go south to the La Posa LTVA.We have browsed the early Flea Marketers, and have about had our fill. We may hit it up again once it fills up, but we don't need but a few small parts for the rig, and don't need many more yard gnomes or wall knick knacks.

Holler if you will be in the area!

Nope, not Quartzsite but we'll be in Slab City on or around the 15th of January till we get sick of the boondocking. Come on down and see us there, it's way more fun!

More fun than a couple hundred thousand people at a big flea market? Hmmm. You sell it well :)

Slab City is tons more fun..especially if you head out to East Jesus and meet up with Container Charlie. Fellow burner. Tell him we sent ya:)   Plus, there are hot springs there for soaking.

You guys seem to forget I'm a working man still :) That area looks to be so close to the Verizon fringe that I would be concerned about coverage - especially staying for any amount of time. I also need access to the Phoenix airport in January, and QZ is less than 2 hours away.

Out of curiosity, is "more fun" speculative or have you guys been out to QZ in January during the Big Commotion? If so, where did you stay? We are looking at staying in the LTVA to have access to trash, dump, and water. The free zones are cool, but it looks like you have to drive to town and pay for services. $40 for 14 days seems reasonable for having some services.

Actually..  no, we've not been to QZ at all. It's on our list of places to check out. So yes, it is speculative on our part at least.   But anytime you have shrunked elwire covered heads hanging from trees in front of a baby grand piano next to a buried bus in the middle of the desert....   well, it does get fun points for us:D

We were able to boost up a Sprint signal there and AT&T was reasonable.  Suspect Verizon and Sprint are from the same tower.

I did a little blog post about first day impressions - read it here! I have to say that we are having a crash course on boondocking. Many of you are very experienced, but Ang and I typically find ourselves in commercial campgrounds. Being off-grid comes with a few lessons!

Kev, from what I read about QZ, it's too busy during the peak. We passed through there last winter and while we didn't overnight, we saw the crowd and it just looked way too geriatric to put up with our shenanigans, so we split. I'd love to hear more reports from you.

About the Verizon signal; our friends who had Verizon while we were there did fine on their cells. We had shitty Virgin at the time and couldn't get a signal. This year we are on Verizon, so I'll report back in a couple of weeks when we're there, and let you know how it goes.

I'm resurrecting this QZ thread because I have to know;

  • How does the general delivery thing work there in QZ?
  • Where's the nearest HellMart/Petco?
  • Where's the nearest water & dump?
We're thinking we'll head out there for a bit in a couple of weeks, now that it seems like maybe the old birds are starting to fly away...
