Reno to Denver - The Not So Direct Way

Ang and I are taking off for Denver tomorrow, and going to take the roads less traveled. Here is a link to a Yahoo Map that might work.  We are planning on getting to Denver on Monday.

The plan is to leave Reno and go east on Hiway 50. In Utah, we will pick up I-70 for a bit to Grand Junction, then pick up Hiway 50 again and go through Montrose, Gunnison, and Canyon City, then up into Denver on I-25.

Other than the short stretches of I-70 and I-25, this is pretty virgin territory for us. We thought as an option we could veer off I-70 and stop over in Moab, then down through Durango. We LOVE Moab, and may do a stop over there anyway so we can get the Jeep dirty :)

Looking for any suggestions of things to do/see/avoid on the trail. I am looking forward to the Nevada stretch of Hiway 50 [ interesting link ]. I have never traveled that hiway in all of the years of crossing Nevada. Love little towns, tourist traps, dive bars, diners, off-roading, hiking, etc.

What would YOU do??

I have washboard abs. They are just hidden under 50#s of laundry.

Angie and I finished our day today in Eureka, Nevada. Great drive today. I would recommend to anyone looking to change things up. Posted a set of road pictures on Flickr. If you wonder where Hiway 50 is, check out the geotagged picture set on the map.

Looks like a really cool trip. If you wanted to do a bit more in Utah you could dip down to Panguitch (stop off at Red Canyon just outside of Bryce), take Hwy 12 over to Capitol Reef area then re-join your original trip East. If you haven't tried it Hwy 12 is an awesome experience. It was of our best rides in Utah & we stayed in National Forest all the way (some great "out there" campsites and hiking).

Have a look at the Utah section on our map here (click on the stops to see more on where we stayed):

Love Hwy 12! One trip we went through St George, then up through Zion NP, out to Hwy 89, then up to Hwy 12. We went up to I-70, but got right back off and went down to Moab for a bit. Love southern Utah!
