Ely is fairly close to you, and it has some town like features. When we were volunteered on the Obama campaign in rural Nevada, the guy who trained us took on Ely/Baker as his territory (we ran the Fallon field office). He reported great things about the people there, and the campaign considered the vicinity large enough to put a field office there with paid staff. So.. there you go.
What to expect in rural Nevada? Good hearted, opinionated, down to earth folks. Lots of dust and arid environment. And Mt. Wheeler at Great Basin National Park is *gorgeous* - great hiking there. Baker is a very small town at the base of the park with a lot of abandoned buildings.. I think there was a post office, a cafe and a gas station.. but not much else.
Have fun.. maybe we'll stop in on our way to Burning Man later in the summer. We took Highway 50 across Nevada before.
